Hold a key, speak, let go. The text appears where the cursor is. Voicely is a dictation app for macOS and Windows. It understands German with its technical terms and, if needed, runs entirely on your own computer.

The principle already existed. We wanted to build it for people who write in German: for doctors, lawyers and therapists whose dictations must not leave their device, and for developers who have to protect their hands from RSI after years at the keyboard.

We built Voicely as a team. As co-founder and CTO, I was responsible for product and engineering.

Voicely recognises which app you are writing in. In an email, greeting and sign-off get their own lines. In the code editor, spoken “slash” and “dot” become real paths.

For doctors, lawyers and therapists there is privacy mode. Speech recognition and clean-up then run on the computer itself. Audio and text never go online, and the history stays local too.

A practice can make the mode mandatory for every member of its team. Switch between the two modes to see which way a dictation takes.

Settings, the lexicon and tones also sync in privacy mode. Dictations do not.

German has quirks a dictation app must know. Compounds, technical terms, numbers, and the word “Punkt” (full stop), which is sometimes a word and sometimes a character. We built Voicely around them from the start.

Examples from the clean-up prompt and the benchmark sentences in the Voicely repository.

56 releases in eight weeks. From 0.1.0 on 12 February to 0.3.36 on 10 April 2026. Every version tag built the app for macOS and Windows, signed for the in-app update.

Voicely is a Tauri app: an interface in React, beneath it a core in Rust with around 120 native commands for global shortcuts, the overlay, audio and local speech recognition. The Rust core alone has 182 tests.

Each bar is one release; its height shows the commits since the previous one. On some days several versions went out, six on 3 March alone.
